Visit of Erwin Hoogland to Pentas for the INDUSTR_I4.0 program
On December 13, 2024, we welcomed deputy Erwin Hoogland from the province of Overijssel. Pentas is the first company in Overijssel to receive a grant under the INDUSTR_I4.0 program, marking a significant milestone. In this blog, you’ll discover more about the program and how Pentas is leveraging AI technology to transform production processes.

Innovation in production processes
During the visit, Hoogland received a comprehensive presentation on the goals, challenges, and opportunities of the AI planning system, along with a tour of our production facilities. Together with the German company Lean Ocean and Dutch firm Xereon ICT, we are developing an AI-driven planning system. This system aims to make production processes more efficient and sustainable by enabling real-time adjustments in case of disruptions, such as machine failures.
Concrete applications of AI
We are already taking steps to apply AI technology; for example, cameras are used for vision analysis to inspect post-processing. The future AI system will not only detect inaccuracies but also make real-time changes to the production process, with the aim of achieving:
Cross-border collaboration
The project highlights the importance of cross-border collaboration. Lean Ocean, based in Germany, is working with Xereon ICT from the Netherlands on the development of this technology. During his visit, Hoogland emphasized the significance of European cooperation to compete with global powers like the US and China.
“Only by sharing knowledge and innovation can we grow as a region and as Europe,” said Hoogland.
INDUSTR_I4.0 program
The INDUSTR_I4.0 program is part of the Interreg VI program Germany-Netherlands. It focuses on supporting SMEs in the border region in implementing digital technologies. With a budget of €10 million (2024-2027), the program aims to realize 80 innovation projects and 80 feasibility studies.
Erwin Altena from Oost NL highlighted that Pentas is a model company within this program. With years of collected data on production times, Pentas has a solid foundation for effectively implementing AI. This not only helps with cost savings but also contributes to sustainability.
Looking ahead
During the factory tour, Hoogland got a glimpse of the rotational moulding process and the direct impact of the new technology. He also pointed to broader challenges such as energy shortages and climate change. “By combining technology with traditional knowledge, we can remain resilient in a changing world,” he stated.
